Cala Grande

Turquoise bright water flashes from the Cala far below the bluff, and above a zig-zag path meanders through a ripe garden where afternoon sun warms the terracotta pots and staked bamboo canes are heavy, ripe tomatoes bursting with juice and sunshine flavour. Shade rests in mauve pools beneath a grove of orange trees with trunks lime-washed white, their citrus scent sharp on the soft air. From below, a sail catches the wind, the canvas flaps and dazzles, the boat glides out of the bay, while here on the terrace the breeze touches hot skin, and mingles salty sea spray with the scent of green bunched mint and basil, drifting across the dreaming afternoon sunbathers, calling them, in a whisper, back into the silken sea.
